Hi - i’m not a modx user yet, so please excuse me, if i don’t use the right terms smiley

I’m searching for a cms to do a quite simple thing - or so i thought previously:

One part of the site has a hierachical tree the other has some kategories. The content in these categories needs to be in more than one categorie.

    Example:

    Part one

    Food
    Pizza
    Chinese
    Burger
    ..

    How to eat
    Finger
    Spoon
    Fork
    ..

    Part two

    Restaurants
    Town A
    Pizzaservice A

    Town B
    Pizzaservice B

    Town C
    Pizzaservice A
    Pizzaservice B
    Pizzaservice C

Can this be done with modx - and can you give me some insight, how difficult this would be for someone with no experience in modx?

Thanks for reading so far and for your time smiley

Wayfinder snippet can do pretty much everything. In some cases you need to call it from either different templates
or use another snippet inside the the call e.g. UltimateParent.

This link provides some good starting links (beside modxcms.com documentation) ---> http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,31368.msg190544.html#msg190544

See the attached zip for wayfinder and if you start playing with it and get stubborn. There is no limits of what you can accomplish! smiley

There are many ways of achieving this in MODx. Here’s one way that just involves laying out your data in the same logical way that you have already set out, and using weblinks to link to the single source of content in each case:

        1) Create a folder called directory. Within that folder, create documents for pizzaservice1,2,3,... Your main content will go here.

        2) Create a folder called categories. Within that create a hierarchy of folders for each of your categories (Restaurants, Town A, ...) and then within those folders place weblinks to the items in the directory folder that belong in that category.

        3) Create a folder called hierarchy. Within that create a hierarchy of folders (Food, Pizza, ...) and then within those folders place weblinks to the items in the directory folder as required.

        4) Use wayfinder to build your hierarchy and category menus by setting the parent folder for each menu to the ’hierarchy’ and ’categories’ folder. Make sure you use the option to show weblinks in the menu.

[easy to understand way of archieving my goal]

That’s a nice way - but i’m afraid that’s somehow a lot of work to do for about 100 categories and aobut 1000 pages each in 5 to 10 categories ... :-(

I was hoping for something easier - like in WordPress (don’t hurt me for saying this word) you can assign several categories to a page and then simply display these categories.

          Thanks for your answers!

You can decide what really your content is about and layout single tree hierarchy for it (site is about food or restaurants?), and then add one or more "tag" TVs to orthogonally link them together.
            Ditto example follows:

I do this all the time. Use Ditto with tagging (as EoL suggested) and you can also use Ditto’s filtering to fine tune the results if needed. Things to consider, any document variable can be a tag value (document id, parent id, title) as well as any Template Variable (custom fields). Also there are several tagging methods that allow you to do so cool stuff. With this combination you can virtually do whatever you need to.

There is a bit more to it like getting the tag cloud and other tag related navigation but there is either a snippet available (like TagCloud or Reflect) or a solution at hand where the forum folk will be happy to help with wink

Some people complain on the screencast being blur. But if going to vimeo its all nice ---> http://www.vimeo.com/929777?pg=embed&sec=929777

Essentially you want to make a relationship between your content pages and one or more other pages representing categories or whatever. This is dead easy! Modx supports @bindings for TVs, so you can easily generate a dynamic list of items (categories for example, which may be other modx pages) that output as checkboxes, multi-select list or drop down list. Then the admin can check off the categories that a page belongs to, and you can use Ditto (or Quill) within your category template to filter the content.

There are two snippets that you can use to make this easy: Quill and (my own) Related. I actually find Quill to be more user friendly than my own snippet for creating basic page relationships, but Related is still useful for creating a complex taxonomy since it also supports Ditto tagging.

                  http://modxcms.com/Quill-2172.html
                  http://modxcms.com/Related-2081.html

Read the forum support posts to see how each can be made to work.

                  Cheers,

                  Mark
