I am new to Modx and CMS in general. I’ve read the installation instructions and downloaded the files. If I proceed with uploading and installing the software to my server will I be able to retain my current web site hosted on that same server. My eventual plans are to migrate my current site to Modx but I imagine this will take some time.
-Will my current site be disabled if I install Modx to the root directory?
Hi Sbentson,
Welcome to MODx!
Yes, you can keep your current site BUT...you can only have one index page at a time so, if you must, it’s probably a good idea to install MODx in a sub-folder. Intalling in the root directory might lead to conflicts. Is your current site just static HTML? I’ve not even touched on other potential issues such as databases, etc (need to know more about your server environment first)
I would advice though that instead of testing MODx on your server, install locally on your PC/MAC/Linux. That way you won’t have to worry about "messing" anything up and you can play with it all you want, at your own pace as you go thru the documentation. There are different applications out there that can help you install MODx (and other similar CMS, etc) onto your home computer.
cheers/k
Thank you.
My current site is static html; no databases in use. What other info would be helpful for you to know?

I would like to hear more about these applications (again...not much experience); any recommendations? --Thanks

The easy way is
XAMPP. I’m a Mac user, and use
MAMP.
Or you can go
this route and have it on a USB stick if you’d rather not have it installed permanently on your computer.
