    Thanks for these suggestions, it is encouraging that I am thinking in the right direction.

    http://localhost/modx/manager/index.php ? - gives Error 500

    xampp/htdocs/modx - Yes
    http://localhost/modx/hello.html - Yes that works

    http://localhost/modx/manager/index.php ? - gives Error 500

    .htaccess I am using is the one in xampp/htdocs/modx

      You are right about - #LoadModule......

      I changed the file in Dreamweaver but Apache will not now restart so working on that now to find reason why.

        Apache now working - fault was a corrupted httpd.conf file. I installed xampp on another computer and copied the file and installed it on original machine. Made the change to #LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

        Now if i put http://localhost/modx/ I get:

        Warning: include_once(C:/xampp/htdocs/modx//modx/manager//includes/document.parser.class.inc.php) [function.include-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\htdocs\modx\index.php on line 112

        Warning: include_once() [function.include]: Failed opening ’C:/xampp/htdocs/modx//modx/manager//includes/document.parser.class.inc.php’ for inclusion (include_path=’.;C:\xampp\php\pear\’) in C:\xampp\htdocs\modx\index.php on line 112

        Fatal error: Class ’DocumentParser’ not found in C:\xampp\htdocs\modx\index.php on line 113

        But If I put http://localhost/modx/manager/ I get:

        access to the manager.

        Thanks to all those who have helped. I’m presuming that if I make changes to modx/index.php it will work with http://localhost/modx/ From that file I believe that the following are the relevant lines:

        111 // initiate a new document parser
        112 include_once(MODX_MANAGER_PATH.’/includes/document.parser.class.inc.php’);
        113 $modx = new DocumentParser;
        114 $etomite = &$modx; // for backward compatibility

          It definitely looks like a problem with the rewrite rules in .htaccess.

          The best strategy is usually to try to get MODx working *without* Friendly URLS on first. So, since you can get to the manager, make sure Friendly URLS are set to off and comment out the FURL part of .htaccess for now.

          Then, first try renaming .htaccess to anything else and see if you can access the front end.

          If that works, try changing rewrite base to /
          in .htaccess.

          I think you’re pretty close to having it working.

            FURLS already set to No in manager.

            I renamed .htaccess, so in effect there was not one and still got:

            Warning: include_once(C:/xampp/htdocs/modx//modx/manager//includes/document.parser.class.inc.php) [function.include-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\htdocs\modx\index.php on line 112

            Warning: include_once() [function.include]: Failed opening ’C:/xampp/htdocs/modx//modx/manager//includes/document.parser.class.inc.php’ for inclusion (include_path=’.;C:\xampp\php\pear\’) in C:\xampp\htdocs\modx\index.php on line 112

            Fatal error: Class ’DocumentParser’ not found in C:\xampp\htdocs\modx\index.php on line 113

            I put .htaccess back and commented out FURLS so that all that is working in the file is:

            Options +FollowSymlinks
            RewriteEngine On
            RewriteBase /modx

            I then got the same error message as above.

            What I am thinking now is that I need something else in .htaccess so I added:

            RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
            RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
            RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /modx/index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

            Again I got the same error message as above.

              That’s very strange. It’s acting as though it’s rewriting and adding a /modx to the URL. Make sure you clear the site cache and your browser cache after each change. Make sure you’re editing the .htaccess file in the modx root (the one with core, manager, assets, etc.). Make sure that there isn’t another .htacces file above that one somewhere in the directory hierarchy (e.g. htdocs).

              Look for a <base href> setting in your template.

              Try this in the .htacces file:

              RewriteBase /

              Beyond that, I’m out of ideas. Sorry, it’s usually a very straightforward install.

                Bob

                Thanks for the help. I’m not sure whether I made it clear but the site is working on an ISP server (not done by me) I thought I would try and get it working locally on my computer, so I downloaded all of the files from the ISP server.

                I’ve cleared the cache, I’m editing the right .htaccess and there is not another in the directory hierachy. No <base href> located. Have tried RewriteBase / - still same fault message.

                The only other thing I have noticed that in configuration in the Manager - Resource path is still pointing to ISP Server as is File manger path - having difficulties getting it to pick up path locally.

                  I assume that you also moved the stuff in the MODx DB on the remote site to the local DB.

                  You’ll need to edit manager/includes/config.inc.php to match the local details, if you haven’t already.

                  Have you done an Upgrade install on the local site? (localhost/yoursite/install). Select Upgrade install and say no to installing the sample site.

                    Dunno 10% of what Bob knows  :P ...but posting this suggestion:

                    Right Click ( ’cache’ folder) -> properties -> security -> select ’Everyone’ -> allow MODIFY permissions

                    Mean give permission to user Everyone to Modify CACHE folder.

                      Bob

                      Well done - I did the upgrade and I can now see the site.

                      Only problem is drop down menu is wrong colour, apart from that it is ok.

                      Thanks for that - I had previously done that by going into safemode under XP.
