If I want my client to have access to edit the content, load pictures to the website, would I set him up as a manager? What do people geneally do? I don’t want him to be able to mess around with the backend stuff. I noticed when I log in, I can also edit directly from the webpage. How is this done?

A manager user has the QuickEdit front-end editor available. You can prevent a user from having access to the Manager itself, and assign him a page to land on when he logs in. These options can be found in the User tab of the create/edit user page.

There are even snippets allowing a manager user to log in with a front-end login form; he’ll never even see the manager login page.
