If using NewsEditor add <object><param> (<embed>?) tag in snippet code --> $allowedTags (can’t remember if NP have this too...)
//Upgrade TinyMCE for valid "strict" flash w/o <embed> and instead use "<object data="...
For this I have: media_strict: true, in Custom Parameters but it should be default in TinyMCE 3.2.4.1. //
BUT
Media is mentioned in the field Web Plugins and I’m running "Custom" as Web Theme. Do you have
Media in Web Plugins field?
I’m new to MODx and I don’t understand what you’re referring to - News Editor?
Go to Resources -> Plugins -> TinyMCE and click it.
Then on second tab (Configuration) check the field: Web Plugins to
see if Media is mentioned in there!
But my guess is that your version of TinyMCE (unless you have MODx Evo) will not let your
embedding code above pass the clean up. If you want to know what it support add a flash object
through TinyMCE and watch the output...
I recommend upgrading TinyMCE and use valid/strict code as I described.

//NewsEditor and NP - NewsPublisher are front-end publishing SNIPPETS.
In the Web Plugins text box this is what’s there: style, advimage, advlink, searchreplace, print, contextmenu, paste, fullscreen, nonbreaking, xhtmlxtras, visualchars, media not sure where to go from here. Should I still upgrade TinyMCE? Any idea how to do that? (I don’t want to screw anything up)

That is because you edit the code through the TinyMCE-editor. So if you turn off rich-text (doc-settings) for
this particular page you should be fine. But upgrade and see the link I posted if you want to add flash through
TinyMCE in the future.
does it matter that I click the ’html’ button to edit the html directly? If that’s the case is there a way to have one page not use the TinyMCE?

The problem is that TinyMCE "helpfully" fixes up your content, such as changing & to & since that will validate. And yes, it even does it for you when you use the "html" window.
There are (of course; this is MODx!) different ways to deal with the problem. You can go to the document’s Page Settings tab and clear its Rich Text? checkbox.
The other way is to put the offending part into a chunk, and call the chunk in your document’s content. I only do this if the site is for a client who needs to edit the documents and they get hysterical if they see real HTML code.
