Total newbie here.
I managed to install Modx on a wamp on a memory stick.
Now I want to install it on my existing siteground account. I have drupal and moodle installed there using their Fantistico install tool. Alas, they do not have that for Modx. I tried moving the unzipped folder to the www directory and also to the root directory, but when I try to navigate in a browser I get an error message 404, file not found.
The instructions I found are a bit ambiguous. Should I have the modx folder at the root or do I have to put the actual files at the root? (I hesitate to try the latter in case I want to clean up later--what a mess of files.)
Siteground will install this for 50 bucks, but jeez. I should be able to do this. Can someone point me to step by step help?
Thanks.
You can put the files wherever you like (e.g. in a subdirectory) as long as the structure of the directories is unchanged and the manager/includes/config.inc.php file has the right settings.
Here’s a good step-by-step set of instructions on how to move a MODx site to a new server:
http://modxcms.com/moving-sites-to-new-servers.html
Remember that unless you want an empty MODx site, you need to migrate the contents of the MODx database too. You’ll also want to do an upgrade install.
Once it’s working, don’t forget to delete the install folder.
Well, it turned out that I was not putting all the files on my server--the contents of folders were not getting there with Filezilla. When I added them manually, I was able to run the install script.
Now all is well, except I get stopped with a message that it cannot find my table prefix. I have tried it with no prefix and with modx and modx_ and I tried going into cpanel and editing the db to add a table. No joy.
Can someone tell me what I need to do to get the prefix working? I am confused by the whole MYSQL thing, but I am one screen away from getting this installed!
The normal thing on a clean install is to start with no tables in the DB and set the table prefix during the install (or let it use the default -- _modx).
If there are already tables there and you’re doing an upgrade install, check the DB through cPanel using phpMyAdmin to see what the original prefix is (probably _modx). There should be about 40 or so tables in the DB with that prefix. Then, just make sure that everything is set correctly in the manager/includes/config.inc.php file (including the table prefix). Then do your upgrade intall.
Thanks. I got it installed after deleting the old db and creating a new one. Then I discovered that I STILL hadn’t gotten all the files into the directory. I guess Filezilla just copies the top level when dragging a folder, or maybe there is an option I should set. In any case, I manually added all the folders (I hope) and Modx is running.
So, Modx installed with ease except that this user doesn’t know how to upload a folder with subfolders intact!
Now to play around....

Other people swear by Filezilla, but it’s never worked very well for me. I’m still using the free version of WS_FTP which I find more reliable and easier to use.

I have a few clients using it and they don’t seam to have any problems, but I guess this is a great example of ymmv...
My suggestion would be to upload the zip file and extract it on the server. If you have Cpanel this should be rather easy to do using the online file manager. I don’t know about plesk or other CP software, but I suspect it would be a similar easy process with them as well.
The upload should be a little faster as your just uploading 1 file vs a ton of little files.
If you want another FTP client to try look at coreftp as it’s another decent free app.

Thanks for those tips. I will try them.
And thanks to Bob for Bob’s Guides. It is giving me just the sort of overview I need. (And I might even try to bake some bread.)

Nothing like a hot fresh loaf of bread! Granted I find that about half the loaf is gone before it finishes cooling
Oh well good excuse to cook more

I haven’t had time to update the bread pages, but I wanted to warn you that the Foolproof Bread will leave dark marks on your dutch oven that are nearly impossible to get out. It didn’t occur to me that anyone would care, but my niece is still blaming me for "ruining" her La Creuset baking dish.
