I do websites in HTML/CSS and Flash with Swish Max 2. A friend has come to me who has a website MODx CMS and she would like me to maintain it because she can not cope with it. She can work a computer, Word etc - is this the sort of system she should be able to cope with?

From what I have seen so far you need more skills than just being able to operate Word. I am having a meeting with her next week to discuss.

I have now worked out that the pages do not actually exist on the server - is the only way to alter them through the control panel?

Can someone please point me in the right direction of where I need to start reading?

The pages are stored in database tables. The manager function to export static html pages are tricky...

Thanks for the links. I have started to read through this forum.

The site is up and running but some changes to design are required.

Do I need to install MODx on my computer or can I work through the control panel on line?

U should take a backup of the database (PHPMyAdmin) and ftp everything for backup purpose. But for
working with Modx u can even sit at a library and login to access all files and tools to manage
it all! The only thing you can’t do is basically photo editing and flash creation!  smiley

Be aware though Im totally obsessed of modx.  grin

See the site in my sig for how MODx works.

What you called the "control panel" is called the MODx Manager and it can be configured so that fairly naive users can do their work. I have some sites where the users know little beyond Word and Windows Mail and they create new content, edit photo galleries, create events in the calendar, upload newsletters, schedule publications dates, and edit existing content on the site without ever asking me for help.

The catch is that the person who sets this all up has to be at least somewhat familiar with MODx.

Once you reach that point, however, it’s not that difficult and you’ll get lots of help here. The odds are very good that once you get used to MODx, you’ll be dying to convert your existing sites to MODx because it makes your life so much easier (and it’s fun). smiley

            Welcome to the MODx community.

Thanks for replies - Bob the guide looks good to me and I will read it.

What have I got - a website in MODx CMS - I can access the manager - also my normal FTP software can access the server and see the files.

Last question before I do my homework - Do I need to install MODx on my computer?

No don’t need to. You can do everything on the website and see the changes effective immediately on the website. However, if you want to do some testing first, then you can install on your local computer - but you don’t need to.

Installing on your local computer requires a server of some kind. Many people use XAMPP.

The advantage of having a local install is that things work a little faster and you can use your favorite editor on some of the files. The down side is that you need a way of synchronizing the local site with the remote. There are some tools for this but they’re fairly new and may still have some quirks.
