How do I create a 404 page?

I’ve created the page "page-not-found"

.htaccess is working fine, and in it I have

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
ErrorDocument 404 /page-not-found

But whenever I type a wrong page it just goes to my root index page.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Normally you don’t have an .htaccess rule but let Modx handle it.
Inside the Manager go Tools => Configuration => Site => Error page
Set it to the id of your Modx document to use as the 404 page, add any custom text etc. on that page, make sure it’s published
