    Hi

I am trying to move the website from the staging folder to the live version and it seems I cannot delete the assets folder
I guess a user uploaded something and since I do not have root privileges I cannot delete the folder

How can I avoid this in the future so I do not have to contact the system administrator

    Thank You

If you have access to the hosting control panel there may be a document manager that would run as root.

You may be able to use the ’sticky’ bit, from wikipedia :-
The most common use of the sticky bit today is on directories, where, when set, items inside the directory can be renamed or deleted only by the item’s owner, the directory’s owner, or the superuser; without the sticky bit set, any user with write and execute permissions for the directory can rename or delete contained files, regardless of owner. Typically this is set on the /tmp directory to prevent ordinary users from deleting or moving other users’ files. This feature was introduced in 4.3BSD in 1986 and today it is found in most modern Unix systems.

Note the ’directory’s owner’. You would need to set a group for the assets directory, which you will also need to be a member of, google should help you here.

OK, but it doesn’t have to be, it can be your user if you wish(and subdirs), as long as apache has write access where it needs it.

So there is nothing I can do except talk with the system admin

This is for corporate website so the account I am using has access only on some parts of the server. I have a special user.

Yes, this wont help your present predicament but should stop it occurring in the future.
