I have recently found a site that
seems to offer free hosting. The ’free’ word drew me in.
    http://zendfree.com
I guess there are other site offering similar services
but I tried this simply because it was new to me.
I took about 2 days to get registered
but look like a potentially good idea.
It is pretty difficult to navigate at first.
But I’m starting to get the hang of it slowly.
    I still haven’t got a completely successful
modx install properly started yet. I copied the installed files to
what I understood as the xampp htdocs equivalent.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that this is
a commonly overlooked issue - any
    help is greatly appreciated

    now get this error message:

Warning: require_once(/home/lolliela/public_html/manager/includes/protect.inc.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/lolliela/public_html/index.php on line 52

    Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required ’/home/lolliela/public_html/manager/includes/protect.inc.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/lolliela/public_html/index.php on line 52

The errors are telling you that your installation is bad, start from this path /home/lolliela/public_html, if this is your base install path you should have a MODx directory structure here, i.e. install, manager, and assets, also you need to run the installer before using the site, go to /home/lolliela/public_html/install first and follow the instructions.
Use MODx, or the cat gets it!

        shamblett - thanks for that.
I believe you were correct in mentioning the bad installation.
I originally uploaded the files 1 at a time rather than the complete zip pack.
Shortly after I noticed a compress/decompress option on the zendfree file
manager so I upped the complete .zip - now everything is back to normal
