I'm inclined to use two or at most three templates, one for three-columns, one for two-columns and one for single-column pages. I will have a dedicated homepage template if it's really radically different from the rest of the site. But the real reason why I'll do that is because of the original decision by the MODx developers to tie extended resource fields to templates (and name them Template Variables). Actually I have fun working with one template, and using CSS to show/hide various sections as needed. Using ManagerManager in Evo made it easy to show/hide TVs for specific resources; I haven't really gotten a handle on Form Customization to do the same thing with Revo yet.
One site I changed the template for originally had over 60 templates; I just used one. But the Revo rewrite I'm doing of the same site so far has the three I've mentioned above, just to keep things simpler for the client's designers. I'll be adding a fourth specifically for a whole bunch (hundreds if not thousands) of static resources only because these will involve extensive tagging and possibly text TVs for search purposes since they will be providing PDF, Word documents and zip files.
