I’m trying to use "prints" as a document alias, so the page would be prints.html, but I’m always directed to the 404 page. If I use any alias other than "prints" it works fine.

Definitely not reserved; it works fine when I add a document with that alias in my tests. Do you have a folder called prints/ in the same directory as the index.php for MODx?

Yes, but I have several other folders with the same name as aliases that don’t have this problem...

Not sure what to tell you about the others, but I can confirm if a folder or file exists with the same name as the requested URI, the rewrite rules will not be executed and Apache will handle the request.
