    Hi Guys

It’s my second day checking modx out, and just finished my first "convert ANY template to modx" tutorial. To say it’s awesome would be an understatement!

I’d like to find out more about the programming side of things, and delve into what the engine can and cannot be used for. For example, would you build something like a twitter site on modx? I use twitter as it is a good social network example.

Would it be easy, or would it require a lot of customization and lots of snippets? I presume you would use something like the ditto snippet to display the user’s tweets when he logs in and custom snippet to display the "following|followers" box.

Also, would each tweet be stored as a document in some document container? If so, how does this effect the 5000 pages limit I’ve read about?

    Thank you guys.

Do you want to build an application or you want to display twitter feeds on your site? If it is the latter then there’s a snippet somewhere in the forums that already does that (can’t find it now....you’ll have to search for it).

      cheers/k

EDIT: Have a look at this

I definitely wouldn’t try to build a heavy-lifting application natively in MODx, but you could develop your application independently and have it run through a MODx front-end.

This is just my opinion and I have absolutely no facts or figures to back it up. wink

That said, I’m working on a project right now that uses jQuery’s JSON-P magic to send and retrieve data between the website (MODx) and a massive application (CakePHP). The app was "easy" to build in CakePHP. I can’t even imagine trying it in MODx.

It’d be interesting to see how you’d do the application part in the Revo framework compared to Cake.

Revo was still in alpha when this project started, which didn’t fly with our client unfortunately. Our app dev guy reeeeeeally likes Cake in any case, so if we had in fact tried Revo he would have been kicking and screaming the whole time. smiley

Exactly why I want to make the framework part of MODx focused on allowing interchangeable libraries and integrations with external application frameworks. Essentially, MODx can serve as the gateway controller to your application controllers, regardless of how those application controllers are implemented.

Now that’s something I was unaware of. Awesome.

Sounds similar to how we’re using Cake at the moment. Without going into specifics we are using it to aggregate and modify data retrieved from several other open source applications via APIs. So, it’s actually got a front-end in and of itself that admins can use to manage the app and data. But the majority of users will be seeing the data rendered through MODx.
