    Hello,

    I’m a new (about 4 hours so far) MODx user and I’ve got a problem. Sorry if this is so basic that even a monkey would know, but I’m banging my head here.

    I’m on the latest version from the homepage, 0.9.6.3. The install all went perfect. I’ve installed a template and created the home page. All good so far.

    Then I wanted to see the page without me (the only user) being logged in, so I clicked the logout (top right) and went to the site.

    Then I wanted to log back in, but even through I’m using the correct username and password I’m getting a "the security code you entered didn’t validate!" error message.

    I must of enabled the captcha when I was first configuring the settings, as the captcha is there. It is using the words that I entered in the configuration, but it just won’t let me in!!!

    Again, I’m entering the username, password and captcha correctly, but still the error message.

    So I tried the ’forgotten password’. Got the email, clicked the link and got the same error message! Then it said "Captcha is not correctly configured".

    I’ve been searching the site, forum and wiki but couldn’t find an answer or workaround.

    Apache Version: 1.3.41 (Unix)
    Perl Version: 5.8.8
    PHP Version: 4.4.9 (suExec is enabled)
    MySQL Version: 4.1.22-standard-log

    and GD is enabled.

    Please can anyone tell me how I can login and/or turn off the captcha without logging in?

    Many thanks,

    Craig

      Edit the assets/cache/sitecache.idx.php file.

      Change
      use_captcha="1";
      to
      use_captcha="0";

      Once you’ve logged in, before you do anything else, turn captcha off in tools | configuration.

      BTW, If you’re entering the correct captcha code and it’s not recognized as correct, it usually means a problem with $_SESSIONs since the correct code is stored in a $_SESSION variable so you may encounter some other problems related to sessions (e.g. getting suddenly logged out of the Manager).

        Hi Bob,

        Thanks for the quick reply.

        I’ve found and edited that code and uploaded the file again.

        When I tried to login, the captcha has gone, but I still can’t login. I got the same error message again, then it said (again) captcha is not configured properly.

        Any further ideas?

        I’m wondering if it’s easier to reinstall and start again - after all now I’m learning it won’t take much to do.

          A next possible step would be to go into phpMyAdmin and edit the system_settings table to turn off captcha.

          On second thought, though, a new download and install or MODx isn’t a bad idea since there’s a good chance that you have a corrupted file somewhere.

            I did a bit of flag changing in myPHPadmin as suggested by another post, but that was for a timing out issue, so it didn’t work for my problem.

            I’m going to go for the reinstall option then.

            Thanks for your help Bob, I’m reading your guides at the moment smiley
