I took a look at your site and my suggestion for you is to try and think on a higher abstraction level. Your web site is made of pages and the pages are divided into categories, thats what you need to get into MODx.
The implementation details of your old site’s navigation, GET function, Arrays, includes etc. are really of little consequence, MODx has its own tools for this, you do not need to build everything from scratch.
Take things step by step and start with the basics. Build the document tree using container documents for categories. Built templates and learn to use the Wayfinder snippet to create the sites navigation. Using these simple methods you can probably replicate 95% of your old sites functionality, only then when you have this part up and running you might need to worry about custom snippets in order to complete the extra 5%.
Thank you - that sounds like good advice. I will start doing as you suggested and see how far I can get.
