Any recommendations for a basic theme/template I can
use to build up using CSS and Chunks?
There are a lot of templates in the Resources (link at the top right of the page); use the Tag Cloud and choose Templates. They have screenshots, so you can pick one that looks more or less like what you have in mind.

Unlike Joomla, removing the default content takes 5 minutes. I do it one of two ways.

      1) I create a new document. I call it Deafult MODx install. In the Page Settings, select Container. Save
Then I move the other containers to that one. I usually keep 404, Site Map, Contact and feed docs. I then unpublish the Default directory.

      2) In the back end, click on Modules, then Doc Manager, then select Other Properties. Select Unpublish, and the in single form line called " Specify a Range of Document IDs", put the ID# of the docs that I don’t need.

I’m on a an Apple computer. I use a basic text editor+CSSEdit to edit my templates locally. Each site I have is replicated on my computer so I have a matching, backup copy of the site. I don’t know how Windows users edit the CSS, but if you’re a hand-coder then it doesn’t matter.

Yep, MODx is very complicated compared to Joomla.

Joomla: it does everything for you, therefore it’s inflexible.
Example: One must create a section. One must create a category. Content can only belong to a category and section. One must build the menu.

@Meristem - nice piece! I’d totally forgotten about the constraints of sections-categories-must-have in joomla! It took me about 6 months too to untangle myself from the joomla "model" of doing things.

        Cheers/k
