Maybe what we need is a central resource linking to the best MODx tutorials out there. I had no idea there were vids around, and I didn’t even think to look. I’m going to start a thread for people to put links to tutorials and we’ll see how many we get.

that is a very good idea.. i had a little look... and i didnt even know this existed!

i think, (imho) the MODx leaders need to assign a person(s) to take command of the documentation.. as there are some gems of info out there.. but its just not in one place or structured as well as others (but im going over old ground)

i know its a young project.. and in time i believe the problem will be sorted... it’s just working out how... and implementing it. Like a noob learning MODx, it will be a learning curve but i suggest we (MODx community) steal the way TypoLight have set out their documentation methods...do you agree or not?

i would just like to point out that ITS GOOD TO MOAN!! see the positive that has arose from my hissy fit!

I was thinking about making a video...

Starting from scratch with creating some basic XHTML markup, creating the CSS and a folder of images( photos and sliced graphics). Then getting the static page running and validated. Part two would be installing MODX, and taking the static markup and making the template out of it, showing where all the folders reside and function. Then creating a dynamic menu, a gallery and a TV area in the template.

I have seen a couple of videos that use the default install, but I think what a lot of folks would want to know is how you start from the beginning (a sketch on a piece of paper) and make some Strict XHTML and CSS play nice with MODx.

My idea was to create a fake business like a coffee company and go from there. There are some good tools for video desktop capture but the critical element is using a good microphone which can be expensive...

Sounds fantastic. I think the real key with good tutorials is to launch straight into *doing* a project and then explaining things as they come up. Too many tutorials start with long, boring explanations of theory before they get to anything useful at all.

Documentation is about as scattered and lacking in learning structure as many open source projects. A good example of a nice starter tutorial that gets you familiar with a number of elements is here:

              http://nettuts.com/tutorials/other/working-with-a-content-management-framework-modx/

I suspect that there has been a bit of a freeze from writers due to the fact that one branch of MODx is ending and another is about to begin. Technical documentation for Revolution is already much improved and user documentation from a variety of sources will most likely follow suit.
