I’m currently evaluating modx for use within our organization - our website is pretty media-centric (images, audio, video, PDF documents) and is edited by a cadre of staff members who are, as a rule, not particularly versed in web design.

What are some best practices for where users/editors should upload this content? Somewhere within /assets (/assets/site/subdirectory maybe?) How do you approach this topic when putting together briefings or documentation for end-users?

I guess you could have them upload content to any location, but the built in file manager typically defaults to assets/images assets/files based on what you want to upload. If you are doing FTP putting resources in those locations typically works well.

      Enjoy

So maybe the best practice would be to create subfolders in both of these areas with the container name?

So if we had an About section, I would tell the user to upload images in

          /assets/images/about
          and media in
          /assets/files/about

Does this tend to work well in practice?

If you have a lot of resources per page/section then you might want to group things further. I guess it depends more on your needs. Typically I don’t group my resources further than the default folders. It’s more personal preference.

Yeah, we’d be looking at anywhere between dozens to hundreds of files per first-level subdirectory, so I’m hoping to figure out what scheme might fit easiest into our users’ workflow.

You might want to look at some of the file management resources to see if any of those would be helpful in your situation and if they require or imply a particular directory structure. FileDownloadPE would give you centralized access control over your files, and there are many others that might make file uploads easier from the front end. You might also consider using a naming scheme (e.g., about-date-filename.pdf, etc.) to make them easy to locate without having to create and navigate through multiple subdirectories.
