    Hi all,

We tried upgrading our website from 0.9.6.1 to 0.9.6.3 recently but although the install process went flawless, after the upgrade all non-ansi characters were garbled, so we had to roll back. Now I’ve been looking into the problem a little but I can’t get a really good idea of what is happening. I hope some of you can help me out.

So first things first, and that is my database. Again, everything works fine with modx 0961 but I noticed in phpmyadmin that utf8 characters are not displayed correctly (only in phpmyadmin, so the site looks fine). I’m guessing this is the real problem here.

All tables in the table overview list:
    MyISAM utf8_general_ci
Also, in the phpmyadmin home I see :
    MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

Firefox shows the phpmyadmin-page as utf8 (I can’t get it to show the garbled characters correctly using another character encoding by the way).

Now your first guess would probably be: You stored non-utf8 characters in a utf8 table. However, this seems not to be the case, because when the text is shown on the screen firefox shows the page as utf8 as well (both in the http-headers and the content-type are set to utf8 too) and like I said, this looks fine.

So my question is: what am I missing? I read something about the mysql-connection character set, could that be it and if yes how do I check this?
    Thanks

    Phpmyadmin 3.1.2
    Php 5.2.1
    Mysql 5.0.32

Thanks! In fact I’ve seen your post and we’re going to try that tonight.

However the fact that phpmyadmin shows the characters incorrectly, makes me suspect something more fundamentally is wrong.. I feel it would be better to fix the problem instead of working around it

Thanks though, we’ll give it a go.

Ahh. Well I don’t use phpmyadmin any more, because I don’t trust it. If you haven’t seen it already you might like to take a look at this older thread about similar encoding problems which occurred when I exported and imported a database using phpmyadmin.

Actually... when I was using phpmyadmin I think I had to do something special to the config of my phpmyadmin to get it to interpret character data as utf8 rather than as a series of bytes. I don’t have it installed any more so I couldn’t tell you what. Just because phpmyadmin doesn’t display the data as utf8, doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with the database itself.

My suggestion would be that if you continue to encounter problems, even after checking your config.inc.php file and using the modx advanced install, you do a mysql dump of the database and check for occurrences of text like ’encod’, ’collat’ and ’latin1’ etc. as a poster on one of those other threads suggested.

          Good luck!
