    Hey there,
Forgive me for not grasping this, but I’m taking a look at MODx because I stumbled across it and it seemed like it was a very awesome program.
I’ve managed, created, and edited my own websites in the past with a control panel interface from my hosting provider to manage my files, databases, ftp accounts, etc and still allowed me to create my own webpages in an HTML editor and upload them to my website root via FTP, completely independent from the control panel.
I thought that’s what MODx was, but apparently not.

What I was wanting to use it for is to manage a html website I’ve built for a friend.
With this interface, he could go in and update the information himself without needing to know anything about html and how to edit it.

But the problem I’m running into is a lack of understanding how MODx works. It appears it’s not designed to be an HTML site manager, but instead for you to build a website off a preconfigured, yet customizable structure. And I’m just guessing you’ve got to use a template or design your own to begin as the foundation, then customize the content of your site.

I’ve never created or messed with websites other than HTML ones, so the structure of MODx is rather foreign.
Can someone please explain how it works for running your own website? (Not how to get started or any of the other several pages of info I’ve read.)

What I’m not getting is does there have to be a base page, such as the Home Page, the main page, and then all of the rest of your website content is contained inside that?

Thanks and I hope someone understands what I’m asking.

MODx can be a bit mystifying for sure. It takes some study shall we say.

Whether it is right for you depends on your site needs and experience level. I too am a photographer. I am pretty comfortable creating a design, coding it XHTML and building the CSS. If you can do these basic things and want a very flexible, powerful and well supported content management system then MODx is for you.

There are some great blog platforms like Wordpress and there are a ton of other CMS platforms to pick from as well. Some are simpler than MODx and some are more complicated. I tried like ten of them. They all take some time to learn, you have to get to know the lingo and you have to see what others have done with the platform. Others will tell you why MODx is great with all kinds of technical language. For me it became the slow realization that MODx will allow you to build your own site your way, with your design, while having all the MODx components working with you. With some of the other platforms I found that you had to modify or backwards engineer someone else’s design template to implement your own design ideas. This process is a messy awkward undertaking. In the end this was what sold me on MODx.

I think the best way to see MODx in action is to take one of the main member sites for a spin at www.sottwell.com See how the dynamic nav menu works and zip through the pages. Then go into the back end manager via www.sottwell.com/manager/ and you will see the page tree, how pages are created, the templates, the snippets (modules), chunks (reusable bits of code), etc all work together. Also check out this informative site: http://bobsguides.com/MODx.html

No matter which CMS you choose you will want to develop your site locally on your own computer instead of a live server. If you are on a Mac then get MAMP, or the Windows equivalent. Then download and install MODx. Read as much as you can and then try building your template page. All your content pages will use the template you choose or build. One of the features of MODx is that there are many ways of doing the same thing. It’s very flexible.

A word on the MODx community: I really like this forum. There is an incredible knowledge base here. People also take the time with new users ( I am one of them.) I found the Drupal forum to be too large and that there seemed to be a lack of patience as well.

      Hope this helps!

        hi dmphotography,

this is very true.. im 100% new to the world of CMS’.. scary isnt it ;-)

i was in the process of trying and testing a few CMS and i found MODx not only the easiest to use for its power & complexity but also the community has been the most helpful, knowledgeable and friendliest.

my experience of Drupal was the same as Photowebmax’s..
i also found the Joomla community to be full of arrogant tossers, and ts not very a intuitive system...
XOOPS users never answered my question on why id be best picking xoops over any other cms and several other CMS communities i have tried didnt have the volume of regularly active users...

im looking forward to the book coming out too...
Like everything, a bit of effort is needed to learn MODx, but the learning curve is NOT as steep as Joomla, and easier than Zen Cart, which I found fairly easy to learn, and like you.. im a designer.. limited to making pretty site with css, my PHP skills extend to "hello word" and i know even less of MySQL

MODx is defo a great choice!

Welcome to MODx! I spent a lot of time investigating different CMS’s, and it can be challenging and daunting, but you’ll get the hang of it. I think MODx is a great system and a wonderful solution for a lot of web sites... depending on your exact needs, it may be a perfect match for you.

If you’re just getting your feet wet, I’d recommend watching some of the videos and reading through the Wiki:

I put together some videos about it:

I was pretty baffled at first, too. But once I caught on to the snippets and chunks and templates, I realized it is far easier than I first had thought. It’s not only a content managment system, but also a code management system... code is broken up into little pieces that are easy to understand, and therefore to modify.

As far as making a template... If you have an HTML page you like, you’re almost done! Replace various sections with MODx tags and it will probly work first time. For example, take out the content and replace with [*content*] . For navigation, replace your menu with Wayfinder: [!Wayfinder?startId=`0`!] . And so on... For user comments, login, etc... copy snippets and chunks from the resource section here. If you install the sample content, you’ll have most of what you need already set up.

There is also a great template tutorial at Sotwell’s site. MODx from the inside.

Great videos! Just one suggestion about the pronunciation: It’s "MOD-ex", not "MODE-ex." wink

Yep. Ryan sent me an email about it -- I’ll address it in future videos.
