Hi there,
I know this is a MODx forum, but I have found that the forum users are all all crack ninja devs.....so I hope you wont mind me asking this question here!
1. I have to develop a shopping cart and was wondering which merchant to use?
Its for a UK client that will most likely have quite a low volume of sales (well under 100 a month, probably less).
2. How "template-able" is the merchant, as transactions would need to take place offsite on a secure page.
3. How easy is it to integrate with from a web monkey point of view?
Now for the cart!!! I have built a MODx cart, fairly basic but I was surprised to see that my approach was very similar to Treasure Chest (minus all the impressive ajax!!) Has anyone hacked treasure chest to integrate with a UK payment gateway....was it fun?
Thanks in advance...

If U.S. $15/m is in your budget, then I think FoxyCart suits your needs. Template integration with modx is very good. It’s conceptually easy enough to build a simple catalogue with Template Variables for your product pages, and Ditto for summary pages. Then "add to cart" and "view cart" are just links to FoxyCart functions and views.
I would love to use foxy cart!!!
But the client will not do 15 yoyo’s a month. In future I will price the yearly fee in, and offer foxycart as a solution...as it is very slick indeed.
How long will it take you to integrate a UK gateway with your cart? A day? Two days? What’s your time worth relative to the $180 a year for Foxycart? Most of the time it’s not worth reinventing the wheel. Having said that, I can recommend Paypoint (previously Secpay) as a UK gateway, and since you have a low budget then go for their hosted checkout pages rather than using their SOAP api for a full integration - then you don’t need to worry about PCI compliance or SSL, as transactions occur on the gateway’s secure pages. Google Checkout is also worth considering - look for a snippet called gCart.

I hear ya therebechips, it’s my fault I did not suggest foxy from the getgo. The problem is there are no supported Irish Merchants....so it slipped out of my mind a while back.
Its only when I sat down to build the cart that I remembered foxycart and said "awww crap"
It would have been perfect for this too!
Thank you all for the info on the gateways.
FoxyCart supports PayPoint Gateway now, which I believe works for the entire EU, but I could be wrong. Might be a good solution for Irish merchants still though (with or without FoxyCart).
