I’m 99% certain it’s a charset or collation mismatch. What is your manager set to, what version of modx are you running and what are the db config settings listed for the charset/collation/connection from your config.inc.php file?

Like I said b 4 the settings are;
MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)
MySQL connection collation: utf-8 unicode ci
In the manager configuration/site tab it says UTF-8 - I think its the manager that appears not to get the correct charset upon upgrade becuase in the database the characters are fine, its only when you edit and save a document that if fooks up the database with question marks.
The newer version of the installer that you released the other week did work fine, apart from phx, for some reason that broke and all my templates use it.
For now I have reverted back to the older version of modx, I need to setup another domain name to test the new version, so I don’t break the existing install, it took me ages to install then unistall, then install then unistall - still i’m nearly there
