I have a site that's been running fine, all of a sudden I can't login to the manager, there's no error message, it just redirects to the login screen.
I've tried deleting the files in core/cache but that didn't seem to help.
I seem to remember this happening in the dim and distant past on a different install, and there was something in the database that had to be changed to 0, but I can't remember what it was.
Any help would be much appreciated.
PS: When you delete the core/cache files, should you delete the files inside the cache directory, or delete the cache directory altogether?

You could try logging in using Chrome in Incognito mode.

It doesn't matter if you delete the files inside cache or just the entire folder of cache as it'll get recreated automatically. Do what Andy suggests though but it sounds like a permissions issue on the user to me. Is it possible that someone may have changed any of the user policies and groups?

Yes I've tried logging in on Incognito mode and it gives the same problem.
I think this is a fairly common problem and I'm sure I've seen it before, but I can't for the life of me remember how I fixed it!
I think this may be the solution you were remembering. Presumable you could do this via phpMyAdmin:
