Hello,
I cloned an existing ModX-Website (2.2.10-pl) in a new Hosting-Environment for testing purposes. Migration worked fine. My steps were:
- Fresh Installation of the identical ModX-Version on the new Server
- Copying of the directories "assets", "core/components" and "core/packages"
- Import of the existing Database
The following conditions apply:
- mySQL-Database-collation (latin1_swedish_ci) as well as the Character Set (UTF-8) are identical in both environments
- PHP-Version (5.6) is identical
- Its both hosted at the same hosting-provider
- Additional PHP-Parameters (memory-limit, max_inout_vars and so on) --> all identical.
The problem:
Everything works fine so far, except for the fact, that (for all languages) special characters aren't displayed correctly (frontend & backend).
The relevant database entries look exactly identical, I double checked for some specific examples.
Example: In the german tree, I have a resource named "Messgrößen", in the cloned version of my website it's now called "Messgrößen". This also occurs for all other languages. Even the copyright sign is wrong.
Question:
What did I miss? Are there other options and settings in the system that I overlooked? From my POV all settings and all files are identical. I'm clueless where the problem could lie.
Thanks for your help,
Matthias
Just check regarding this statement.
mySQL-Database-collation (latin1_swedish_ci) as well as the Character Set (UTF-8) are identical in both environments
Did you select this option during MODX setup/installation
and when creating the new database on your hosting account?
Hey Andy,
yes, I selected it during installation and the database in the hosting environment is also set to this collation. The fields look identical. The characters in the database are identical (see attached screenshots of my example given above).
Have you deleted the cache folder and cleared cache inside the manager?
Yes, I deleted all the files and folders within the core/cache directory right after installation, just to be sure and also cleared the cache via manager.
Bob Ray's
Site Check might help in this situation.
https://bobsguides
I have not used it but there is a review here that
https://barrd.net/blog/technical/sitecheck-cmp-modx-bob-ray suggests it is very good.
You might want to contact Bob to check it is compatible with the version of MODX you are running.
Thanks for your reply. I just don't see how that should help me? My site's integrity is alright. As I said, all works perfectly well so far, I just see the wrong characters and am not able to some characters from foreign languages (I tried to manually fix some of the broken Texts and wasnt able to enter /copy&paste the texts from the old website). So it really feels like its some setting I'm missing, especially because the database is 100% identical.
I'm not sure if it would help. But it might be like a second pair of eyes checking things for you which is often helpful!
Is the web server Apache? Could the encoding be set differently there:
https://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/core.html#adddefaultcharset
I don't have influence on the apache server as it is just a normal hosting environment, not a VPS or anything... Should be setup identically, I assume, since its the same hoster for both sites.
