I created a website in the older (1st) version of MODx (revolution?? I get confused or is it evolution?) About 7 years ago. Since I had a family and no longer do websites.
My client now wants the website to be mobile/ tablet friendly. Is there an easy cost effective way to do this?
Any ideas/ help I would really appreciate.
I created the site using the first version of MODx CMS, using HTML, CSS and snippets as I remember.
Thanks very much.
The complexity of making the site responsive would depend on the sites design and markup really but its usually relatively simple to convert something to be responsive. It's a front-end development issue though so MODX doesn't really play a part in making the site responsive itself.
Ok thank you...
We have had a few quotes from some we designers/ programmers and essentially they have been suggesting they need a new website. From your reply I can assume this isn't the case and should be fairly easy to do? And they don't need to be a MODx programmer to do it?
Thanks very much for your reply.
You're welcome.
If you're able to post up the web address it should help gauge the complexity.
I converted a couple of old MODX sites to be responsive a while ago. Almost all changes were confined to the CSS file using media queries, though I had to make some modifications to page Templates, especially when implementing responsive menus (I used the Sky megamenu on the site in my sig). It wasn't simple, but at the time I wasn't that good at responsive design.
A couple pieces of advice:
1. Make a copy of the original versions of the things you change (or, better, the whole website) and work on the copy. When everything is good, transfer it to the live site. I used Git locally to let me comment on the changes to the CSS file and revert them if necessary.
2. Chrome Dev. Tools (Ctrl-shift-i) has a mode that simulates the display of pages on various devices (the second icon from the left in the toolbar). It's not perfect, but it will show you when things are seriously wrong with the design.
It looks extremely simple and shouldn't really take more than a few hours to be honest. You may need to redevelop the tables on the fee page into divs but theres not much work involved at all.
Essentially though you're just taking the absolute pixels and converting them to percentages where needed.
So for example your #mainfull will become width: 100% instead of 993px and then the main content (#main) and aside (#maincol) will become something like 70% and 30% respectively not including margin spacing. You may benefit from just integrating a framework grid like bootstrap if you're not that clued up on media queries.
https://getbootstrap.com/docs/3.3/css/#grid
For small devices, you may want to set main and #main and #maincol to display:block, and do the same for your menu choices (or implement a hamburger menu).
Thank you very much for your help.
Front-end Dev here. I agree with Bob and LK, that site could be made mobile responsive in less than a day. PM me if you'd like a quote.
