    I am looking to create a website with MODx if possible that can handle these features http://www.thecondenser.com/purpose.txt does anyone think this is possible with modx or should I start looking into other solutions.

      Given that this is much more about user generated content and social networking, rather than content management, you might be better off building a bespoke application with a framework like Codeignitor or Cake. It think it would be doable in MODx Revolution, or MODx Evolution + xPDO, but I’d imagine you’d struggle at this time given that the documentation is still in development. Or maybe I’m wrong? In either case it would be a good idea to not reinvent the wheel; for example the problem of online photo editing has been solved by the likes of Picnik who provide an API for integration with your own site; you might also want to look at Google’s Open Social for your user profile management.

      Anyway, good luck with the site.

          I use CI, but Cake I’ve only played with. Kohana looks like an interesting fork of CI, not sure why you’d want to go with it over CI though.
          CI is lightweight, easy to use and very well documented, and while it does lack a lot of stuff like ORM and authentication, the community has filled in the gaps with things like http://codeextinguisher.com

          However, since MODx Revolution is built on top of xPDO and I seem to have become a bit of a MODx junkie, I’m now trying to dig deeper into it and see what I can do with it. Very early days though.

            Thanks for the feedback so far. I’m going to give coedigniter a try.

              Functionally, they’re similar, but there are many reasons to use Kohana over CI:

              1. php 5 autoloading. Kohana uses autoloading as opposed to the CI loader class. With Kohana you write $my_class = new My_class() and it is autoloaded automatically. With CI you’d write $my_class = $this->load->library(’My_class’);
              2. Improved session class that has drivers for cookie, file, and database storage. CI just supports cookie.
              3. Improved validation class that validates $_POST and/or any other array. CI’s validation just works on $_POST directly. Also, Kohana’s validation class can use callback methods in any class. CI’s callbacks must be in the controller which leads to duplication.
              4. Kohana helper functions are put in static classes so they’re namespaced and can be extended.
              5. Developer activity. Kohana is much more active and responsive than CI.
              6. Many more simplifications and improvements...

              Edit: 7. Kohana has modules: http://docs.kohanaphp.com/general/modules

              Main disadvantage of Kohana: documentation is a work in progress - but it’s coming along.
