It looks like a host related problem to me as the system is telling you it’s unable to connect to the database. The fact it has a username/password indicates the config file (manager/includes/config.inc.php) exists and has no problems.

I would check that your database username/password is correct and that the correct permission has been assigned to your database.

I agree, my first step would probably to build a simple php script that connects to the database and returns something from one of the tables.

If it works...then something is missing in your modx setup...if it doesnt your provider is wrong, and you should contact them and check your permissions.

Also I’m not sure if it’s a security issue but I wouldn’t post my username on an open forum to access my database, even though the password isn’t provided...I know that not posting it definately isn’t one. smiley

Do you have a recent backup?

Could you login to the database via phpmyadmin and get a backup maybe...just in case?

          Good luck,
          Taff

I really want to thank you all for attempting to come to my rescue. I am new at all this, and apparently way over my head. I just spent 2 hours on the phone with my host provider, and apparently I deleted my database. We attempted to do a reinstall from an old back up, but that has not worked either. I am very torn inside, because I just spent almost 8 months working with widget, and snippets, and modules.. trying to get my site up and running.

I think I just need a way simpler system for my skills.

Thank you again! From the bottom of my heart.

What was the problem by doing this?

That would interest me too. Surely they have a backup less than 8 months old. Get them to send you the sql query if possible.
I wouldn’t give up quite yet.

I’m sorry to hear about your trouble. First, I want to say that I’ve been there several times over the years and that it often turns out to be a good thing (although I’m sure it doesn’t seem like it now).  Quite often, I’ve found that large programming projects can be recreated in a surprisingly short time and with a much cleaner, more robust design since all the false starts you abandoned but forgot to delete are gone.  The ideas are all there in your head and, once you start over, they’ll come flying out.

Second, I’m not sure I’d take their word that you deleted your database (unless you remember doing it). It’s not that easy to do, even on purpose, and you usually get a pretty stiff warning. You would have to go to the control panel for your site (not MODx, but the cPanel or Plesk control panel provided by your host). Then you’d have to find and launch phpMyAdmin or something similar, find the command to drop the database and confirm that you wanted to "delete your entire database."  If you don’t remember doing all that, you probably didn’t delete your database.

That leaves three possibilities that I can think of:

                    1.  Your database is still there (unlikely since the techs can’t seem to find it -- but I’ve dealt with some pretty clueless techs).
                    2.  Someone hacked your site and deleted the DB.
                    3.  Your hosting service accidentally deleted the DB and doesn’t want to admit it.

PS: If you were working strictly within MODx, there is virtually *no* chance that you deleted your database.

                    Good luck.

I agree that if your db was deleted that there should be a backup on the host someplace. I feel your pain and hope you get this worked out. If you find the db file you may not want to trust the host techs to do the install since they may only think that they know what they are doing.

                      Keep us posted.

As for not being able to erase your own site in modx, well there is one case where this is not to difficult to do. I had this happen during an upgrade and the "install demo site’ option was accidentally selected and that whiped out the entire site and replaced it with the demo site.
