It basically depends on where you are coming from and where you want to go to.

CMS Made Simple has a completely different aim than MODx and SilverStripe.
In simple maths I’d say: MODx = SilverStripe + CMSMS - ABunchOfissues

SilverStripe is not bad and has potential, but to me it seems like it is lacking technical maturity. As in there is still a lot to do.
This comes especially to light when you try installing an addon or take a closer look at the level of ’userfiendliness’.
It is also rather a CMS for coders than for designers and even meant to be that if I am not mistaken. Interesting is that it requires PHP5.

CMS Made Simple is good for those users who don’t want to bother with coding and want to (very) quickly set up a simple site.
The admin interface is quite clean and userfriendly. However, when using it make sure that you don’t have future plans to make your site more
complex and customized. You are likely to meet the borders of viability in that case.

MODx is both combined, it can be used by designers with a lack of coding skills as well as by programmers who plan to do something
complex, indual and specific. Sure, you could use notepad for that, but that’ll take some time to get finished. laugh
That’s been said, MODx is not free of issues and lacks either (versioning, multisite support, code output etc.) however, they are on a whole different level.

If I find time, I’ll write a summary of a PHP CMS comparison I made. smiley
