How do i achieve that a visitor first see a photo/page/background and after 5 seconds redirect to the homepage?
a kind of splash page with a timer.
Is that possible within modx?

Yes, but its more of a front-end development requirement and nothing to do with a CMS as such.
But you can do it with some simple jQuery.
$(document).ready(function() {
$('#yourdiv').delay(5000).fadeOut('slow');
$('body').delay(5000).css({
'overflow': 'visible'
});
});
Place and style up your image (it'll most likely need to be a fixed position element with 100% width/height and a high z-index) in a div called #yourdiv and set your body to overflow hidden.
