If the server is out of memory that doesn't necessarily mean this particular site/user on the server is the one causing the memory to be full - you mentioned cpanel, so my thought was you might have other sites pooling from the same available memory.

You can most definitely run MODX with less than 1GB ram; I have a 2GB VPS with about a dozen sites on it, and the main reason that was last upgraded to 2GB is the nightly backups slowing things down too much. Also have a bunch of other sites on simple shared/reseller plans.

That was my initial thought with being on shared hosting, but I still can't figure out why it's only the manager area. If it was another site using up all the memory, wouldn't the front and back end of my site being performing poorly (with CloudFlare off anyway)?

In general for everyone who's been helping me: I might see about starting a fresh Modx install somewhere else and slowly adding pages and elements to it until I hit a snag. I'm completely out of ideas, and trying to troubleshoot when the manager only works about 10% of the time is painful.

I did some more troubleshooting today. I emptied single database tables to see if it stopped the errors, but none of them did.

      I tried emptying:

      • site_content
      • site_htmlsnippets
      • site_plugins
      • site_snippets
      • site_tmplvars
      • site_tmplvar_contentvalues

Are there any other tables that I should try deleting?

As a last-ditch test, I completely deleted the entire site and setup a fresh Modx install with just my custom folder names and the core folder outside the root, and I still get the 500 errors and huge spike in memory usage. I assume this means it's 100% a problem with the server?

Just for the heck of it, I also tried a clean install without making any changed to folder names or locations, and still received the errors. [ed. note: firebot6 last edited this post 7 years, 4 months ago.]

Okay, I'm making one final reply here with my "solution."

After days of messing with and documenting this, I just moved to a different host that offered more memory (2GB physical, 8GB virtual), and the manager just works now. I have no idea why the old server suddenly "broke," the host was pretty insistent that I should figure out why the site was using so much memory, so I never really got too far. I love the old host, I've been with them for a decade, but it wasn't working out with this particular site.

Thanks everyone for the troubleshooting help!

I'm glad you got it sorted. Being at a MODX-friendly host makes a huge difference in my experience.

The Manager uses way more memory than the front end.

Yes in that I was having similar problems within manager. I had been looking for an answer here and my host found modsecurity issues that fixed it. Quote from: markh at Dec 22, 2016, 04:32 PM
Zenfort, is that related to the problem firebot6 posted about? It sounds like you may have replied to the wrong post, or meant to start a new topic?

That was me until I found out EIG had bought up my hosting company.

Were you with Site5, That has gone from 1 hour to answering tickets to ( and my best ) 41 days to get a backup to be told they only keep backups for 7 days.

In the process of moving around 300 sites off their servers now, EIG are the worst hosting company ever with no regard for the clients of the company's they purchase.

I had to drop some hosts from this page: http://bobsguides.com/modx-friendly-hosts.html.

The box at the top has some helpful links. One links to a page showing a current list of EIG-owned hosts.

I was on Site5 and Arvixe. My EIG experience in some bullet points:

                      • Site down due to they now requiring different file permissions and they messed with server settings without any information given. I found out by support tickets.
                      • Then they broke the admin pages (backstage) and I wasn't able to backup my sites. ...Luckily, I found MODX Backup widget! smiley
                      • Then they replaced the support team with monkeys and in order to open a ticket for dialogue I now needed to type in a password I had never set up.
                      • Then they changed the backstage login-form to include a checkbox that said I agreed to all their new terms and conditions. Opting out meaning NOT logging in!?
                      • They refused to help me migrate domains and end my account. I had to call my bank and put in a block as they kept charging me.
