Thanks for all your help Bob. The problem has now been sorted by my hosting provider - apparently the site was configured to work on temporary URL. Now they have altered this setting in the config file, friendly URLs work ok. Not sure how or why this happened or whether it was something I didnt do.

Normally, all you have to do to activate Friendly URLs is to:
1. Change the Friendly URL System Setting
2. Rename the ht.access file in the MODX root to .htaccess
It sounds like your host complicated this by having their own .htaccess file in the MODx root. I generally don't like hosts that do that.
