I was attempting to change the home page of the site temporarily. So I was going to rename the resource alias to something other than index and then publish a new holiday page. As I was swapping the alias I am guessing something has been corrupted because now I can't change the text in the content. I can change the html tags, but if I go to change the text in a paragraph I get the error.
I was trying to find the table that the resource and/or content live in, but was unsuccessful in tracking that down. I would appreciate some help.
UPDATE: I stumbled upon the table needed when i was backing up the db to update to the latest rev of modx. I am not used to phpmyadmin and didn't notice the pagination on the list of tables. I found the page and the content in the modx_site_content table. When I try to do an update directly to the table I get an error in phpmyadmin stating "Incorrect key file for table ./mysite/modx_site_content.MYI; try to repair."
UPDATE 2: I was able to run a repair table on modx_site_content from teh phpmyadmin panel. Hope this helps another in the future, but currently problem solved.

FYI, the official way to change the home page (temporarily, or permanently) is to change the site_start System Setting so it contains the ID of another page. That way you don't have to modify the original home page at all.
