Correct, the OnBeforeDocFormRender and OnDocFormSave I believe are the events I generally deal with when scripting plugins like this.

have a look at ning - www.ning.com

It’s free, can be set up in about five minutes and does all the things you want in regards to users maintaining their own accounts, galleries, linking to friends etc.

It really depends on whether you want to take the time and headaches involved in building your own system or use one that’s already to go in an afternoon.

I use Ning for all my clients’ social networks, and use MODx for the rest of the site.

This is a very simplistic example, and the actual db code is encapsulated in an external class, but here is one such plugin I use (names changed to protect the client):

This plugin is registered only for OnDocFormSave (this is why I don’t have the switch statement in the plugin to check the event name). It checks the template, and if it is the appropriate template, data is updated to match what is being saved in the tv called event-ID.
