Has anyone looked at the compatibility options or issues with running MODx on the Google App Engine?  Is that even remotely possible or would it require a ground up redesign? I’m guessing the Python language issue would be the biggest problem? Am I right in my idea that where MODx uses PHP for it’s logic, Google App Engine uses Python? Or are those two separate realms?

Seems like the ability to use Google App Engine could possibly be a strong feature point if it could be a module or easy repackaging that made configuration about as easy as the current setup is on PHP/MySQL.

      Bumping this thread one time.

Another thing I was wondering ... if it is possible to use Google App Engine in place of MySQL, then would that create an easy way to use Google ID’s for login accounts. I’ve seen a few demonstration apps that use the Google ID for login so that once you are logged in to Gmail, Calendar, Docs, etc, you are also logged into the application on App Engine.

An example of the login method I’m talking about.

I’m not sure if we could ever expect Google App Engine to use MySQL since a big part of their advertised feature is BigTable or whatever. So MODx would have to offer support for multiple database engines and include GAE as one of them.

The PHP, I could see them possibly supporting sometime, but I have to wonder why they chose Python to run some of the most wide spread web applications in the world if it’s not better than PHP.

They employ the creator of Python I believe. smiley

BigTable could wind up being a DB driver for xPDO in the Revolution branch.

The BigTable feature is not a relational database engine and will likely not have a PDO driver. It might be possible to create an xPDO-specific driver to access this if they release PHP support for it or someone provides an efficient PHP extension or set of classes that can communicate with this custom, distributed, data storage and retrieval system. But I don’t see it as practical at this time or in the near future.

That said, integrating with custom data from Google App Engine via XML or other serialized formats may be perfectly viable.

I believe it's possible to do this on any existing MODX site using the Google API, but I could be wrong.

The point being that Google just announced php support for app engine.
