Looking for help with a crashing/weird ModX site

Background: I've inherited a site that uses ModX. It was running 2.2.x, but unbeknown to us, the server was upgraded from PHP5 to PHP7 at the weekend. We've now upgraded to ModX 2.5.1, and the site itself is *mostly* working okay but we have some weird stuff happening.

Within Manager, if we click a folder in the resources tree we get a 500 error. BUT we seem to be getting absolutely nothing logged to any log files so we're stabbing in the dark. Can anyone suggest what and where we need to configure, in order to try to get some diagnostic info?

Platform is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Given that the forum post - and solution - is over two months old, shouldn't there be a new ModX build? Or something? To get silent errors is pretty bad; I've had to debug it via the age-old "I am here" methodology. My TinyMCE installation reports that it's up to date, although with an installation date of 2013 I find that surprising?
