This could be a problem with the character set. Look in the DB at the character set of the tables and text fields (especially the modx_site_content table). Compare that to the character set specified in the core/config/config.inc.php file. If there's a mismatch, see this:
http://bobsguides.com/convert-db-utf8.html. The script there hasn't been tested with the current version of MODX, so I can't guarantee that it will work.
The most common cause of mismatches with a moved site is that the MySQL default is latin1, so if the old site was all utf8, the new DB may have been set to Latin1 -- causing the mismatch.

Thanks for quick reply!
Everything is set to utf8.
At first the db charset was set to Latin1 so the site was looking all funny with wrong characters.
But all the tables are and have always been utf8.
I wonder if it could have something to do with PHP setup. What do you think?
