You were right, BobRay! Some conflict must have been happening. I completely removed the core/components/extendeduser folder and the problem went away. Then I made a hook that changed the class_key at registration. Seems to be working fine now.
Rather than a hook, you can just remove the line of code in your CE class file that sets it to ext_user (or whatever). Then it will use the default.
