    Hi,

I’m about to make the next step and make a slightly more complex site then i have been doing. But want some advice and any tips on how to certain aspects of the site.

The site i’m going to create list business within an area and these business are split by category (bar/club/restaurant ect) these will be the menu items but the end user will need to also be able to filter by subcategory (pizza/pasta/curry ect). These business will also be to be rated by end users.

It looks like ditto will be the best option for the job, unless anyone can advise otherwise. I think i’ve worked out the best way to do the category menu items. I’m thinking put all the business in a folder and assign a TV for the category. The create a document for each category with a ditto call that filters by category.

But the what i’m not sure about is how i can create a search that will the end user of the site to select a category and then filter the results by a subcategory.

And the other thing i’m not sure about is how can i assign a field to each document that the end user can effect to give a rating/star rating to.

Also is it possible to have a TV that generates a list depending on what option another TV is set to. For example:
TV 1 has Restaurant set so TV 2 would have the following option to select pizza, curry, pasta. But if TV 1 had hairdresser set you would want a different set of options within TV 2.

Thanks in advance for any info given.

      Hi Ben,

It’s early in the morning and I can’t think... grin as for you rating documents, you have at least two choices

      1. CSS Star Rating: http://www.modxcms.com/CSS-Star-Rating-547.html - this is what is used in the MODx Repository
      2. Anything Rating: http://www.modxcms.com/AnythingRating-2205.html - Ajax based, demo here: http://www.modx.wangba.fr/index.php?id=100

Thanks Kongondo for the reply smiley, that ajax one looks really nice. And seems like it should be easy enough and there’s good documentation. The only thing that how i’d do is allow only logged in web users to vote.

If you have any ideas, when it’s not so early in the morning, on how to get ditto to do what i want. If ditto is the right thing to use.

        Many Thanks

          Ben,

I have a feeling tvexplorer and/or PHx could be of use to your project....how you would implement them exactly, that’s another matter. Anyway, have a look at them and see what you think.

PHx extends modx in very powerful ways. You could use stuff like conditional operators, etc to extend your site’s dynamism

Also is it possible to have a TV that generates a list depending on what option another TV is set to. For example:
TV 1 has Restaurant set so TV 2 would have the following option to select pizza, curry, pasta. But if TV 1 had hairdresser set you would want a different set of options within TV 2.

Why do you need two sets of TVs? I mean, why the TVs for Restaurant/Bar, etc?

If I have any other ideas will hola  grin

Thanks for the info, i will have a look at those.

The reason for the 2 TV’s is the first would be the main category. So would be the type of business and the second would be what they offer. So if the type of business was Bar then within the subcategory which can have multiple tags i would have stuff like Live Music, Food, Beer Garden, Quiz ect. This sub category would allow a user to search for Specific needs, Say they want to go to a bar that has live music and servers food if these were tagged then it would display. As these sub category will be different depending on what the main category was.

            Thanks again for your info.

Ok all my html/css is now complete so going to start creating the site in modx.

But still humming and harring as to the best way to structure every business within the site. Do you think i should create all business as documents or should i create a webloginPE with all the relevant fields such as category/subcategory in a webloginPE template (also any one know if it can handle a swf/flv upload to it?). I think this is probably the best way as ideally i want this so the business can sign up themselves. But is it then possible to display all the business on a page and then sort them by categories and also have them searchable by main or sub category.
