Yes, it can be done with DNS, but we’ve definitely got a load balancer in our setup. i’ll try and do some digging around as well, but it’s odd that it only happens the first time the site_start page is requested. i haven’t noticed it on any other pages...

I think that’s exactly when it happens behind the Cisco balancer we’ve seen. It’s very very sporadic too, going just fine for weeks then it hits. Clearing the cache seems to fix it when it does occur.

I think I’ve tracked this down to the following issue discussed here:

        http://www.inventivelabs.com.au/weblog/post/apache-s-internal-dummy-connection

I think if apache connects before a genuine user, it can cause problems with the cached version of a document.

Maybe we should add the suggested rewrite rule:
        RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^.*internal\ dummy\ connection.*$ [NC]
        RewriteRule .* - [F,L]

to the modx .htaccess file. I have, and it seems to have fixed the problem so far...

Now that’s some good research! Seems like that could be handy as a default template addition, commented out. By chance would it matter where that gets placed in with the other rules?

i think it should probably be the first rewrite rule, so it definitely gets processed and not overridden by other rules.

Thank you very much for this research redman; it will be invaluable to the community as we start to work MODx into more demanding environments.

Amen to that. I’ve experienced this on rare occasions and always wondered what caused it.
