this is going to be a private site for keeping records on snake feeding... I have the main page setup with thumbnails and minimal info, click on that and it takes you to the page for the specific snake with expanded details... what I want to do is be able to input and list when and what they were fed, as well as a few other stats.

The only way I know how to do this is with Ditto, creating a new document for each feeding session per snake (as a child document per animal)... this can become a large hard to manage system after a while. As for now I only have a few snakes, but I plan to add more, and next year I will begin breeding a few of them, so I will need to keep details on the offspring and who they are from...

Is there a way I can make a front-end based form to input this data instead of using documents and TV’s - then use a call to retrieve and format the data to my liking?

      Why don’t you use Jot?

A document for the main details and then a custom comment form template for all the additional fields you need. This way you only need to use on doc, data is in the db and you can display it all on one page or use pagination. Plus you can add/manage them on the front end.

Just build out a custom template with custom placeholders and away you go.

Cool... I will try that out. I have never looked into Jot, but sounds like a good idea.

        Thanks

This is looking ok for now until I noticed something that is going to be a huge problem.

Comments are lost when documents are renamed.. is there a way around this?

          Ignore that! Me being stupid!

Is there a way to override the post / edit dates?

Is there a way to split the form and the comments into different <div>’s?

          Thanks!

I’d post a question in the Jot forum if it is what you are using. They shouldn’t be lost though since I think they are tied to the document id and not the title.

How is it you want to split them? Do you want to add styles? Show them in different columns? I can think of some creative ways to do this.

Can you show me what you had in mind using a pic or sketch? Or can you explain to me in detail?

Re post edits I’d drop them from your template and create a form field and manually enter a date. (you could include the date engine js to insert a date. You may need a snippet to make it use timestamps or the unix date as jot stores comments fields as text.)
