    Hi all.

I just upgraded a site to 2.5 and it's all OK - but I find the process in the docs very fiddly.

    I read Bob's guide here:
    http://bobsguides.com/modx-upgrade-faq.html

Which says to upload the entire directory to the root folder.

But if I do this, surely I will lose all my packages, components and core config file?

My question is, if I use the server file manager in cPanel, will it overwrite the entire folders or merge them? (It doesn't seem to give me the option to replace or merge)

What I have done is manually upload each folder, but this is A: time consuming, and B: dangerous as I could easily miss a folder or file.

Anyone have tips on a smooth foolproof upgrade process?

    Thanks
    Andy

Ooh! Didn't even think to look for an extra to upgrade. Does it work well?

So far, it does. I haven't used it for 2.5.0, but no one has complained about it yet. wink

As with any MODX upgrade, I'd still recommend backing up the site first, though.

BTW, the MODX .zip file doesn't contain a config.inc.php file, packages, or any of the other files you're worried about. Extracting it in the MODX root won't remove any existing files, it will just overwrite old files and add any new ones, so it shouldn't overwrite anything of yours.

In fact, unzipping the files to their correct locations is exactly what UpgradeMODX does (just a lot more conveniently).

Ah Ok - i didn't realise that if I extracted it into the root it would merge the files liek that - i assumed it would overwrite. - the only thing is that when I extract the zip file, it puts it all in a folder - I can't unzip the contents directly into the root folder though.

That's why my upgrade FAQ advised unzipping it locally and zipping the files inside that directory so they can be unzipped directly in the MODX root at the remote site.
