If change of course demotivates anyone to get chipping away on working on custom themes let's talk about why. I'd hate for that to happen. I think a good goal for 2.3+ is for us to destroy the conception that there is only one MODX Manager by adding more options to choose from.]]>

This is a really great screencast on ember and the future of it. Not specifically trying to sell it, but this shows a lot of new concepts and future changes that take what ember currently is, and makes it even easier in the future.

One of the quotes later in the QA kind of sums it up:
"So I start adding more objects and making my application more complex, and now i have to like... try and figure what people think the best practices are?"

Rather than trying to figure out what best practices are using backbone/angular/etc, why not just apply to a foundation that has all of those best practices built in 'for free', so the developer doesn't have to; including modification, keeping creativity at a max, while spending less time on edge case patterns for a framework that may or may not break in future updates.

To offset the worry of 'bloat': sometime this year, ember will be shipped with a build tool to basically remove anything from the core that the app doesn't use, chopping down on modules it never actually makes use of. (!!!!)

One of the main concerns is size; Ember weighs around 260kb (71kb gzipped), while backbone weighs around 20kb(6kb gzip) (this is bare). To achieve similar functionality, you might see the code hover around the same size. As long as the Javascript is being cached, then this isn't a problem after first load.

Alot of people recommend ember if you have a persistent application that might be open for long periods of the day. If its something you refresh alot, then it's likely not recommended. From what I understand the idea is to move away from actual pages and use ajax/data-binding to handle page changes?

With ember, there is almost always a specific way to handle things (MVC-based) so when multiple programmers are digging into the code, stuff just wont work if its not done right, while backbone might suffer from overzealous refactoring from what I refer to as "Binary Coders". Everyone knows at least one of these guys tongue They go so crazy while making it less lines of code that it makes it literally unreadable to anyone except them, with fractions of a milliseconds of performance gain over a more readable method.

A strict MVC with a single template engine lets people make changes without having to decipher cryptic programming from 'that guy'.

Backbone is pretty straight forward though, and leaves alot up to interpretation. I'll toy around with ember and modx and see if i can get it to play nice.

If anyone else is tasking themselves for this, it'd be really nice to see the manager panel designed in a modular route, so new panels can be added with ANY framework without hacking away at it.

Just to understand a bit about whats intended to happen...

In my head all transactions between the controller and the model should happen through an xpdo adapter; To prevent any potentially security infringing actions to the model.

In terms of this adapter, you would send data to the php adapter from ajax, then check any authentication levels for updating the page, whether the page has been locked, etc. If it fails, it responds to the ajax call with a success or fail, triggering an appropriate error or success message.

For Ember.js, one big problem is assuming that only one person will be on the panel at once, so you can't fully leverage local data storage. The application might have to auto-update ever few seconds or so to determine if some state has changed in the view by another person requiring an update for that view.

There's alot of things to look at, so these things will need to be kept in mind when deciding on a framework.

Assuming by new manager you mean 3.0. On a high level:


  • Functional Spec
  • Sketches/Wireframes Discussion (Layout & Functionality Only)
  • Markup First, Mobile First Front End Development
  • Style Guides & Themes

The "functional spec" for a new core has not been published yet. Please do not assume MODX 3.0 is 2.x built over with a new UI.

Part of front end development process is deciding on the toolkit to use. jQuery? Backbone? Angular? Ember? Currently that is happening here:

I guess the challenge is that we've spent years teaching the community that the MODX team hold the "purse strings" so to speak - and now that is shifting.

It takes as much time to unlearn things as to learn them, if not more smiley

What seems to be missing is a driver, a person or small group of people to make decisions and to run with things. Historically this is the Core team.

Collaboration is great but leadership gets things done.

This contest does need some clarification and of course the green light. Hopefully there will be more by next week.

I think the UX working group is a great thing regardless of what comes of it. Any project that aims to better MODX software has the support and interest of the core team. It doesn't matter that the core team may or may not be directly involved. We don't always have all the answers, or the time to explore every aspect of the design phase. There I said it.
