I realize this response is almost 6 1/2 years after your OP, but if you still have questions about this rabbit-hole, let me know! (Take the red pill and I'll show you how I accomplished this myself!) (LOL Matrix reference haha)

The solution involves using XRouting (https://modx.com/extras/package/xrouting) and making sure that you have properly set-up your domain contexts (https://docs.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/contexts/creating-a-subdomain-from-a-folder-using-virtual-hosts)

I’m looking to develop cross context symlinks but my understanding is that this is currently not supported.

Would I be right in thinking that this is a permissions issue? Is it possible to solve with a plugin that grants permission if the target resource (i.e. the content being linked to) is in a specified context?
