It’s ridiculously buggy (the Back button, for instance, doesn’t work at all) but it will do the job for rendering your pages in Internet Destroyer Explorer 6. It also does IE7 and 8, in case you only have 9 installed.

Alternatively, if you have an extra XP license lying around, you could easily install an XP virtual machine using the free VirtualBox. Then you would have the real thing.

Another possibility is to use Microsoft Expression Web Super Preview, which is also free. Personally I don’t recommend this as it’s totally static and won’t let you test Javascript or even click links.

Hope this helps.]]>

I used to keep a laptop with IE6 on it around for testing, but now I usually use this: http://browsershots.org/]]>

Can anyone suggest a reliable way to test IE6 and IE7? I heard Microsoft will allow you to download disk images (that expire but no worries) so that you can test your websites in a real windows environment.

I know there are other solutions like MultiIE (think that was its name) but I am not sure if they really accurately behave like the real browser.

I am currently considering the use of Enhance JS (developed by the Filament group) to do capabilities testing for these sites, serving up a basic experience for older browsers and serving up a ’enhanced’ version for browsers that can handle it. It looks quite promising and I think it’s about time I can start convincing clients that serving up a basic (yet still completely accessible) experience for these users is OK these days.

The analogy that has stuck with me was from Andy Clarke when he used an analogy of a black and white / colour TV set with the old black and white tv set (ie browser) still able to access the basic reception, but without the surround sound and high definition goodness.

Interested to hear anyones thoughts on EnhanceJS! smiley]]>
