Thanks for the reply doze,

Who do you use?
I currently use Estonian based hoster (netpoint.ee). It’s very cheap and has been reliable for the three years that I’ve had it. When I started to use it, they had no monthly or yearly fees at all, just one registration price at the start which was 25 euros. smiley This year they started to have yearly fee for 45 euros and that buys you: 2GB space, 50GB monthly bandwidth, 10 ftp users, 100 mailboxes, 4 mysql db’s with 6 users and 25 subdomains. They have PHP 5 (with mod_rewrite and Zend Optimizer) and MySQL 4 + the usual misc apps such as webalizer, imagemagick, cron support etc.. and daily backups for all files/dbs..

Previously I have used other Finnish based hosting companies, but I don’t do web development professionally. This is just my hobby for me and I really don’t know what you should have... I don’t know for example that how this hoster cope with sites that have much traffic, all I can say is that my site works smiley

But if you are going to do web development professionally, I would still suggest to get a VPS so you can setup things the way you want.

What you need to do is find a good host which you can could buy a starter package with and as you grow have the possibility to upgrade your account for more features or even to a reseller account.

With regards to custom php.ini most hosts have a global php.ini defined on the server and then in each customers domain area a user could upload their own php.ini which is specific for their domain only.

One thing to be careful when choosing a web hosting company is that there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth or 300GB disk space a lot of companies over sell what they have now and you may find later on down the line that your account is suspended for breaking their TOS or your site performance is slow due to the hoster over selling resources, I’ve read about a few hosts recently that suspended a user as he was uploading over 200gb of data who also got no money back.

A couple of questions, and here is what I want to do. I am looking to formally start a design business from home, and have one client, with potential for several more that he is ready to refer.

I would like to offer the hosting as part of my package, plus that gives me better control, if the client wants it instead of hosting on their own and me just doing the redesign. I would like a hosting company that offers unlimited domains, but allows for me to control whether I am using MODx (custom php.ini and .htaccess) without affecting the other sites that I am hosting. I’m not sure if that is possible, or not.

I would also like (or dream) of a host that covers the domain registration automatically each year as part of the hosting package.

I am looking now at Host Monster and IX Web Hosting, and does anyone have any knowledge of them? They both ranked high according to customer surveys, etc.

Thanks for all the great info!]]>

Who do you use? The most interesting thing that I was looking at was the multiple account (domain) hosting that was available. I have two sites for myself, one of which I am going to be transfering to MODx, the other is a wordpress site. Now I have one client, and a potential, bigger client, and would like to host them as well. I am on a limited budget too, which doesn’t help.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great!]]>
