Well, I worked with CubeCart for a while, and every single site required serious modification. In fact, the busiest part of the CubeCart forums is for the patches and hacks ("mods") that people have made and contribute back to the community, some free, some for purchase. I even did one or two custom mods. But it’s a nightmare, because once you’ve added these "mods" to the core, you’ve lost your upgrade path. The best you can do is keep a record of what mods you added, and then add them again to the upgrade... provided they’ll still work on the upgrade!
I’m migrating an osCommerce site and a CubeCart site to SHOPx the beginning of next year. Both of them are in the same quandary that you describe: tons of necessary customization to the core core has made it impossible to upgrade them (and it wouldn’t be worth the enormous time and effort to upgrade and redo all those changes and mods). The biggest advantage of MODx is its modularity, which pretty much keeps this sort of thing from ever happening.]]>

We’re not 100% there yet, but we’re looking at adding some functionality to develop your own shipping and payment gateways, which, paired with the XML datafeed and JSON cart object... hopefully it’s flexible enough for at least 25% of the businesses out there.]]> The Man Can! That’s exactly what you get with Foxy Cart honestly. MODx and Foxy Cart are an incredible combination that coincidentally mirrors many of the much-promoted features of the checkout found in allurent.com ($250,000 licensing costs, btw, before you ever even get started on the implementation...). I’m not associated with Foxy Cart but I’ve watched it grow up REALLY quickly and love how much time and effort it saves me in getting great e-commerce workflow. It’s not free, but it sure does hardly cost anything (starts at $15/month).]]>
