Link spam is now a massive problem, and continued use of the forums means you agree to the terms above.]]> rethrash Nov 12, 2010, 10:29 AM https://forums.modx.com/thread/125/modx-forum-guidelines#dis-post-1022 <![CDATA[MODX Forum Guidelines]]> https://forums.modx.com/thread/125/modx-forum-guidelines#dis-post-1021 This is a community of MODX users, both experienced and inexperienced. We expect you to conduct yourself in the same way that you would expect to be treated in the "real world" and show respect for your fellow forum members. With that being said, we have outlined some specific dos and don'ts below and by participating in the forums you are acknowledging that you have read and agree to ALL of the formalities below.

Introduction
You explicitly agree by creating an account on this forum, along with the other items below that you will:

 • Reveal your real identity when asked by the project founders or forum moderation team, and not hide behind a fabricated online persona. This forum is for professionals who need assistance with and that want to proactively and professionally contribute to the MODX project.
 • Stay on topic and abide by Moderator actions, even if it ticks you off from time to time. The Moderators here were chosen for a very specific reason, but if you feel they're out of line feel free to PM rthrash or OpenGeek.
 • Refrain from posting spam in the forums or via the PM system, or making posts solely to increase your post counts.
 • Refrain from using anonymous proxy systems like Tor and others to post and circumvent ban filters. These are too frequently used abusively.

How to Report a Problem or Get Help
If you come across any violations to these guidelines, you may notify the moderation team by clicking on the “Report this post to a moderator” link at the bottom of each post. If you have a problem with a Moderator, PM rthrash. Please do not hesitate to contact a moderator or administrator if you have any problem with our policies or the actions of other member.

Comment Spam or Spam-like posts
Spamming will instantly get your account banned and 99.99999% of the time deleted. Don't post spammy things on the forums or via the PM system, even if it's in the off topic forum. Posts with lame attempts at hiding offsite links will also get you banned (links on a period, for instance). Posts made with links to your business site that don't really add value in the eyes of the moderators will get you banned (use your signature if you want links to your sites but follow the signature rules below). Posts that are made just for the sake of bumping your post count solely in the judgement of the moderators also count as spam (and will get you banned). We've dealt with thousands of spam posters and we just don't have the time to ask the author of every questionable post any more. When in doubt, ask a moderator first.

No Ad Hominems
Users with very low (or no) post counts that post "in agreement" or "in thanks" in an existing topic will be banned. This is a sure sign of future spammers.

Forum Signatures
We only permit text-based forum signatures. SEO link spam signatures are grounds for banning and account deletion without warning. A maximum of 3 links (e.g., personal site, blog, work site) are permitted, along with an unlimited number of links to MODX resources and support sites. If we make exceptions for image signatures, no images larger than 60px tall by 400px wide; and definitely no animation, flash or other such items that can annoy people.

It's OK to post environment information in your signature. It's not OK to post issues there, they can be inflammatory and viewed as rants, generally creating ill will in the community.

Do not PM, email, IM or Skype Project Team Members for Support
Running this project and ongoing development is time consuming enough. Contacts for support have to be ignored simply due to the volume of inquiries for personal support requests. Repeatedly contacting team members for support may earn you a temporary, multi-day ban from the Forums. The forums, IRC channel and paid support options (coming soon!) should provide adequate venues to resolve any technical or training issues.

Search before posting...

No Offensive Content
There may be places where explicit, obscene or vulgar language, graphics or behavior is appropriate; however, the MODX Community is not one of those places. Posts containing explicit, obscene or vulgar language will be removed. Similarly, posts that solicit or offer explicit or X-rated GIFs, JPEGs or similar content files will be deleted without notice and the posters account will be immediately deleted! Links to Websites with adult content/images anywhere on the site will be removed. Simply put, we do not wish to be seen as supporting any site that contains adult content – adult content being defined as any material that you would not feel comfortable showing to your spouse, your parents, your teenagers, or your boss and co-workers. In other words, anything which is "not work safe", including anything you may link to link. Violation of this is grounds for immediate banning, and the decision to do so is left solely to the arbitrary decision of the project founders and/or moderators. It's a delicate balance of "is it meant to offend, degrade or poke fun of?" vs. "is it a legitimate inquiry, question, link or showcase?".

Personal behavior
Don't attack others. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully ... without insult and personal attack. Repeatedly posting flame bait is grounds for being banned.

Repeatedly posting the same thing over and over or ranting about a topic are also grounds for banning or reporting to spammer databases.

Your privacy!
Think before you post or speak: Do you really want to put your address or telephone number on a public discussion forum? We encourage you to keep personal information personal.

In the same vein, do not ask for personal information from others. Discussion forum posts that request members to submit personal information to another party will be removed. Information that should be considered personal includes but is not limited to your home phone number, name, and age. If you must give this out for any reason, please do so privately via the PM System on these forums.

Copyrighted Information
Information copyrighted or owned by any individual or entity other than the member should not be posted on the discussion forums or software libraries without the consent of the owner. If such an event occurs, the individual posting the information shall be held solely responsible. The MODX Team and site shall not be held responsible for member-posted information that may violate copyright law. Material deemed to be copyrighted and posted without proper clearancewill be removed by the moderation team.

Write for Clarity
This is an international forum and English may not be everyone's primary language. Try to be as clear as possible when writing so that everyone can understand what you're trying to get across:

 • Keep paragraphs brief – use paragraphs judiciously.
 • Use punctuation, properly.
 • Keep "chunks" of text organized and topical, and turn them into paragraphs.
 • Re-read your posts out loud. Do they make sense, and are they as clearly worded as possible? Edit them for clarity and brevity. Try to make them shorter (in writing, shorter is actually harder!).

No Cross-Posting
Do not post the same discussion more than once on a discussion forum or on many forums. Duplicate discussions are frustrating and counterproductive for other members, especially for those whose time and energy is limited. Duplicate discussions will be deleted.

MODX Discretion
MODX and its assigned staff reserve the right to remove a post which does not relate to the topic being discussed in the forum. In addition, the MODX reserves the right to organize discussion forums in order to best serve the majority of our members. For example, narrow-interest or minimal activity topics may, at the MODX discretion, be relocated to a more appropriate discussion forum, or deleted entirely.

MODX or its assigned agents also reserves the right to prohibit or delete discussions that are thought to violate applicable law or that may be harmful to other members, the sites that comprise MODX or the rights of MODX or others. That said, we cannot ensure prompt removal of offending discussion forum posts. We also reserve the right to remove your membership from you should you violate these Guidelines.

Considering the real-time nature of this forum, it is impossible for the MODX to review all messages or confirm the validity of information posted. Please remember that MODX does not actively monitor the contents of all posted messages and is not responsible for any messages posted. MODX does not vouch for or warrant the accuracy, completeness or usefulness of any message, and is not responsible for the contents of any message. The messages express the views of the author of the message, not necessarily the views of the MODX or any entity associated with the MODX.

Any user who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to contact us immediately by using the "report to moderator" link. MODX has the ability to remove objectionable messages and will make every effort to do so, within a reasonable time frame, if it is determined that removal is (or even might be) necessary. This is a manual process; please realize that we may not be able to remove or edit particular messages immediately. In fact, we may not edit or delete posts that break our rules at all. We have many time constraints on us and cannot guarantee that we will be able to edit or delete posts that break the rules/user agreement.

If you do not agree with the above, then do not view or register for the MODX forums. Although this Discussion Forum does not and cannot review the messages posted and is not responsible for the content of any of these messages, MODX reserves the right to delete any message for any or no reason whatsoever. You remain solely responsible for the content of your messages. Use of the site is at the discretion of the MODX support and project team, and that any use may be terminated at any time.

The user agrees as a condition of registering for the MODX forums to be truthful in regard to all information given during the registration process, to use the site as per the instructions, not to disclose his password to others for use, and that MODX has a license (permission) for use of anything the user submits or posts to the site.
