e.g. I have http://www.test.com/chickens.html redirecting to http://www.test.com/monkeys.html - but when Google adds the gclid parameter to the original url - the redirect fails - e.g. http://www.test.com/chickens.html?glicd=test does not redirect to http://www.test.com/monkeys.html?glicd=test as I need it too...

Any ideas on how to ensure MODx redirector allows the ?gclid=test url parameter to work in the redirect?

How are you specifying your redirect? If I remember correctly, it allows regex. As long as you don't end the pattern with a $ sign, that should accept further parameters on the url.
