I’m trying to install the SMF Forum module to my site, but get this message:
Setup will now attempt to setup the database:
Creating connection to the database: Database connection failed!
Please check the database login details and try again.
I don’t understand what I did wrong, or what details it is referring to.

Usually that’s referring to username/password stuff... did you configure this correctly?

Where do I configure that stuff?

Also, I can’t log into the manager now, I get this:
Failed to create the database connection!
Please run the MODx install utility

When you first install MODx, you have to edit the /manager/includes/config.inc.php file to include your database name, database username, and database password. You should try using that criteria to log into MySQL (using something like phpMyAdmin)... then you can verify if your database is even working at all. You can isolate that part of the problem. If YOU can’t log into MySQL, there’s no way MODx will be able to.

I wonder if the SMF Forum module has a configuration file that you need to edit before installing it so it knows how to connect to your DB (or how to find /manager/includes/config.inc.php).

is smf supposed to point to the same database as modx? the config file doesn’t have the smf database information, only modx
