This one's an old chestnut. Lots of people have had problems seeing the thumbnail images in FCK editor, and over the years, so have I, and I've never found a solution, or set of solutions that make sense of the whole.

The site in question today is an Evo 1.0.5 I use Firefox, latest version.

Today's example was weird. I usually load images up using ftp, and put them in sub-folders eg: /assets/images/subfolder. I then enter the html to refer to the images by hand, or use FCK Editor, whichever seems quickest at the time. Today I uploaded another batch, same routine as usual, and Filezilla showed the new files in the right place (in a sub-folder called .../advertisements). But no matter what I did, FCK Editor wouldn't (create and) show the thumbnails, nor for that matter did manual entry of the html (<img src =".... etc) pick up the image either. Bizarre. I've had invisible-to-FCKEditor images before, but MODx could always serve them if the url was correct.

I checked for filenames with umlauts and the like - nope - no non-standard ASCII characters used. CHecked permissions - same as all the other subdirectories, all of which were working fine. Just this one batch.

I shortened the sub-directory name to "adimages" - perhaps some bizarre filename-length-limiting hangover from the 70s on my host. Nope. Then I prefaced the subdirectory name with the numerals 14 - /assets/images/14adimages/.

It worked! All the thumbnails were instantly created, and FCK Editor sprang to life. I changed the subfolder back to /assets/images/adimages/. Broken again. Added-back the numbers. Visible again.

It was Adblock plus! Perhaps because the directory name started with "ad" (bet then so do two others in the same parent directory and they are perfectly fine). Anyway, I've given up trying to explore further, but Adblock Plus, with a filter in place, is no longer getting in my way.

Another thing to check if you are getting that empty feeling with FCK Editor.
